'for the love of singing..'

Our system of lessons and courses is flexibly but carefully structured to provide you with a full range of activities to help develop your ability to 'Stand up and Sing a Song'
User Comments: "'The Performance Foundation course is the perfect antidote to singers with confidence issues - I thoroughly recommend it. I have felt completely lost with my voice for so long, but it all seemed to come together for me in this course. Even though I've got so much further to go, I now know that the foundations are in place and I am actually starting to feel interested in listening to music and singing songs again. This just wouldn't have happened, had I not done the course. The class forces you to face the fear of getting up in front of a group and sing with a microphone. It is the perfect safe place to practice taking your voice from an individual lesson environment to sharing it with a group of people. I think it has broken down quite a few barriers for me. We even got to sing under the lights - I loved that bit!!' " :: Anne Stafford

In your first lesson, your teacher will have a conversation with you as to your vocal history i.e. if you have had any previous training, sung in a choir, with bands etc. to establish what you want from your voice. If you have any vocal health issues, this is the time to spill the beans!

It doesn't matter whether you are a beginner or a professional, your teacher will assess your needs right away. They will usually ask you to sing up and down a scale, using different vowels to hear where you voice sits, general tone and texture. You will then start to work with your voice using the SLS techniques they think are appopriate. These exercises may seem strange at first, but perservere with them, as they are purposefully designed to build a solid foundation to your voice.

Once you have worked on a few vocal exercises your teacher will suggest a song, either one that you have brought with you or one from our list of backing tracks. You then apply the exercises that you learned in the first half of the lesson to your song.

Please bear in mind that every singer responds differently to vocal instruction. The singing voice is an advanced physical skill which depends largely on the singer's ability to work subtly and accurately with the muscles and elements of the vocal tract. How easily you will develop this ability depends on innumerable factors, but you can be sure that all Voxbox teachers are knowlegeable and experienced in facilitating this learning process.

To be able to sing confidently and enjoyably is a wonderful gift. But in singing, as in many things, say learning to play tennis for example, we need to achieve a few technical basics before the activity becomes relaxed and enjoyable.

You can deal with the basic technical issues which are tripping you up by attending Beginners' Course or taking private lessons. As you develop a more effective technique, your voice will blossom and you will need to get singing.

Performance Foundations course is a core learning experience. It is here that you will overcome your performance anxieties, develop your skill in choosing the right songs, and enjoy the thrill of performing to your classmates.

Other introductory and intermediate day workshops cover subjects as diverse as intro to Jazz and Music Technology for Singers

If you have trouble finding place to practise, our Studio 2 facility is private and well equipped. We encourage all singers to begin on microphone as soon as they can, (dancers use mirrors, right?) and the mic in here is set up to give you a great reflection of your sound, and train your ear to listen in the right way.
